How do payouts work on Tutora?

Tutora uses the Stripe Connect (Express) system in what is known as Direct Charges mode. In practice, this means:

  • The student pays in Hungarian Forints (HUF) on the platform.

  • The money goes directly to your own Stripe Connect account.

  • Tutora's platform fee is automatically deducted at the moment of payment.

  • The remaining net revenue is transferred to your bank account by Stripe according to your set schedule.

Important: You never have to issue an invoice to Tutora for the commission; the entire cash flow and fee deduction is handled by Stripe in the background.

What do you need for the setup?

Prepare the following before you begin:

  1. Official photo ID (passport, identity card, or driver's license).

  2. Home address (exactly as it appears on your official documents).

  3. Date of birth.

  4. Tax identification number (for experts in Hungary, the 10-digit tax ID).

  5. Phone number (for SMS verification).

  6. IBAN bank account number in a supported currency.

Critical Error Source: Your official name provided to Stripe must match the name on your ID character by character! The number one cause of payout errors is a name mismatch – even a missing accent (e.g., e instead of é) can trigger a manual review.

Supported Payout Currencies

Since Tutora is an EU-registered platform, Stripe restricts payouts to the following currencies:

  • CHF (Switzerland)

  • DKK (Denmark)

  • EUR (Eurozone and EEA countries with EUR accounts)

  • GBP (United Kingdom)

  • HUF (Hungary)

  • NOK (Norway)

  • SEK (Sweden)

If your bank provided an IBAN for an account in one of the above currencies, you can enter it directly into the system.

What is the solution if your country is not on the list?

If you live in a region whose local currency is not supported (e.g., Turkey, Asia, Latin America, etc.), you cannot use your local bank account's IBAN directly. There are two simple solutions:

  • Option A – Wise (Recommended): Wise provides you with a personal Euro (EUR) account and an associated IBAN for free, regardless of where you live. Open an account, activate the Euro balance, and enter the provided IBAN on Tutora. Stripe pays out in Euros, which you can then convert to your local currency on Wise at a favorable mid-market exchange rate.

  • Option B – Revolut: Revolut also provides EUR or GBP accounts with an IBAN in many countries. The process is exactly the same as described for Wise.

Tip: Both Wise and Revolut operate under strict European (FCA/EU) financial regulations. For Stripe, having a European IBAN is what matters, not where you live according to your documents.

Connecting Stripe Step-by-Step

  1. Log in to the Expert Dashboard, then select the Billing and Payouts menu.

  2. Click the Connect Stripe button.

  3. The system will redirect you to Stripe's secure registration interface.

  4. Fill in your personal details, upload your ID, and enter your IBAN.

  5. If anything is missing (for example, they ask for proof of address), Stripe will notify you via email.

  6. Once you are done, you will be redirected back to Tutora, where you will see the green "Ready for Payouts" indicator.

Verification Time and Payout Schedule

  • Verification: The verification of most accounts takes just minutes. If Stripe requires a manual review or an extra document, it can take 1–3 business days. The good news is that you can accept bookings even during the verification process (the funds will remain in a pending status until verified).

  • Schedule: By default, Stripe transfers funds to your bank account weekly. Once your account is active, you can change this to a daily or monthly frequency in your Stripe dashboard.

Common Problems and Solutions

Error Message / Problem

Solution

"Country not supported"

Use the Wise or Revolut solution mentioned above to request a Euro IBAN.

"Name mismatch"

Re-upload your ID and type your name exactly (including accents) as it appears on the document.

"Tax ID invalid"

Check the format! The Hungarian tax identification number consists of exactly 10 digits.

Payout is on hold

Check your emails (including the spam folder)! Stripe is likely asking for additional information or a document for verification.

Final Steps: Fees and Invoicing

Once your Stripe account is connected, you are ready for paid sessions! Don't forget to fill in your profile's official billing details (name, address, tax number) as well, since Tutora uses these to generate monthly commission summaries regarding the platform's fees.

Finances in short:

  • Platform fee: 15% on the Freelancer (Free) plan, 7% on the Pro and Premium plans. This is automatically deducted upon payment.

  • Hold period: After successfully completing a session, the system holds the funds for 24 hours before permanently marking it as cleared on Tutora.

  • Bank transfer: Stripe typically delivers the amount to your bank account between T+2 and T+7 business days.
